Descripción
The granary known as "El Cenobio de Valerón", which dates back to prior to the Spanish Conquest, is one of the Canary Islands most spectacular and iconic archaeological sites. The cave complex houses around three hundred silos which the ancient inhabitants of the island carved out of the rock using stones picks more than eight hundred years ago. These cavities were used to store grain and foodstuffs as well as tools and other objects.
The precipitous position of the cave made it an excellent natural fortress in which to locate the silos, which were excavated into the ground and along the walls of several galleries on diferent levels. To view the archaeological site it is necessary to climb a lengthy flight of steps which leads to the entrance. At this point, the visitor may enter several of the silos using some ramps.
The caves themselves and the breathtaking ravines nearby provide the visitor with an unforgettable experience. Further information about the granary and the surrounding landscape is provided on panels or by means of models and reconstructions wich are placed at different points around the site. The guides will also be delghted to answer any queries visitors may have.
